Victoria’s Secret Thoughts

I have to speak out about this, it has been bugging me for the longest time, there is currently uproar about an ad. Yes, an advertisement. Victoria’s Secret posted an ad that said The Perfect “Body”; please note they put the word body in quotation marks. The reason being, they were talking about their lingerie line called Body by Victoria, I know this because I buy from that line.

Everyone blasted them saying oh you’re giving girls a self-esteem issue, number one, why are young girls looking at this, it is an ad aimed at adult women. B) It is their line; it was not a comment on women making themselves thinner. And lastly, really, with all of the things that are going on in this country this is what you choose to get upset about?

I find no fault in their advertisement, it did not make me want to binge and purge or become anorexic to fit into the body size of the ad. It did not make me want to slit my wrists because I am not that size and do not look like the women in the photo. It did remind me it is time to go in and get fitted for new bras, as I love that particular line they sell.

As an adult, if your self-esteem is so low that a simple ad makes you feel bad, you seriously need to seek help. Not sarcasm, not a joke, get some help, there are other things that need to make you lose sleep and feel bad. Children starving in our own country is one, a government that foists things upon the public that are not constitutional is another, these are just two things.

I am shocked that so much vitriol was thrown at Victoria’s Secret over this; did no one see the quotation marks? Does no one know about the different lines they carry and the names of them? This is like the time everyone was on the whole make Barbie fat bandwagon.

Everyone knows Victoria’s Secret models are thin, and busty and beautiful, and air brushed to the heavens in ads. They starve themselves for the runway show; they do whatever they have to do to maintain weight that is their choice in their chosen field of employment. Oh wait, what was the key word there, choice, these girls and women have made a choice, to be models. Not only models, but Victoria’s Secret models, that takes it to a whole new level because you will be modeling things that leave the majority of your body seen. Seen to be taken apart bit by bit by the public, and if these models were not flawless, heaven help them, because the backlash would be worse than the one for that simple ad.

People love to spew hate, and with the advent of the Internet, that hate is rampant due to the face that people believe they are anonymous. They spout whatever they can to get attention, it is insanity.

Leave the models alone, leave Victoria’s Secret alone, learn to read an ad, and leave Barbie alone. I for one, do not base my self-esteem on the images of others, if you are truly worried about your daughters, teach them to read, to think, to explore their world. That will give them self-esteem, self-awareness and a thought process that goes beyond the superficial.

Barbie

There is much talk these days of creating an obese Barbie; at first I thought these posts were a joke. Who would want to mess with Barbie? She is iconic; no one has had a problem with the way Barbie looks since she was created in 1959. She looks good for her age. I don’t understand why people have issues with the way Barbie looks. Some say her measurements are unrealistic, to this I say; she is a doll, a child’s toy. She is not real. Children play with her, they dress her up, they cut her hair, they take her head off and marry her off to Ken. I married mine to G.I. Joe, he was much more masculine than Ken.
If what some people are saying, that Barbie is giving girls unrealistic views of their bodies, then what will an obese Barbie do? Encourage them to have triple chins? Encourage them to have big bellies? I have seen the picture of the Barbie that is obese and she is hideous. Seriously? Do you want to encourage young girls to be obese? That this is ok?
What about teaching them to be healthy? What about teaching them some form of exercise is acceptable? Why not get them away from the computer screen, television, and tablet, whatever it is, and get them outside? Take a walk, run, something.
There is a whole generation of children that do nothing but sit in front of a screen all day. Whether it is a television, gaming, tablet or computer they do nothing but sit and eat. Giving them a doll that promotes this is nothing short of insanity.
Barbie is more than a pretty face, she has taught generations of girls they can be anything they want to be. A doctor, a lawyer, a gymnast, a teacher, a dancer and a superhero.
She doesn’t need a makeover, she needs to be applauded, she is special and unique, and she does what she wants in a world of conformity. Barbie stands out and stands the test of time, generations of girls have played with her and learned they can do and be anything.

Language

I was thinking about colloquialisms, the ones I grew up with and the ones I still use today, as everyone knows I grew up in Oklahoma, however the speech patterns I was surrounded by were pure Southern. Fixin to, I’ll be there directly, let’s go over yonder and of course my absolute favorite, y’all. I was watching the Andy Griffith show all weekend and the way they spoke is very much the vernacular I grew up hearing. I wish I could sit and jaw awhile but I got to skedaddle. I really miss hearing the dulcet tones of a southern accents telling me if I don’t get my behind in the house before dark I’d get my hide tanned right and proper.
I often think about the language I grew up hearing and how it has shaped my love of words, there are so many ways of saying the same thing. You can say it in a colorful way or you can say it in a mundane way. I prefer the former, I used to love listening to my grandpa tell stories, he told them so fully and colorfully that until I started school I thought he actually knew General George Washington.
If you did not grow up with a southern background, I would love to know some of the colloquialisms you grew up with, please feel free to comment. Also, if there is anyone out there that has something they would like to say to me privately, please feel free to email me at angie@angieworld.com.
Yesterday we had a birthday party for Tessa’s birthday, her actual birthday is today, she is 5 years old. I got her a Fancy Nancy outfit, doll and book, she got tons of littlest pet shop things, Barbies and a couple of scooters. This was just our side of the family, of course Jeffrey, Elizabeth Anne, Freddy, Alex, Tessa’s Grammy and Grandpa (my ex and his wife) and myself. The Irishman had to work, so he missed the festivities, I know he hated that he missed them. I was in charge of the cake, it was a pink, princess Barbie dream cake, just adorable in its sparkly pinkness.
It was the perfect finale on the weekend, I hope everyone has a pink sparkly week ahead of them

Friday Amazement

So much to write about so little time, let’s start with Friday at the team huddle, where it was decided that my blog should be read. It was regarding the mini tacos from 7-Eleven, still think they are amazing, a party in one’s mouth. So, Victoria starts reading out loud, I thought the topic was mundane enough, wow, was I wrong. My boring words said aloud by Victoria, well, let’s just say that if I ever decide to record my words, she will be the one reading them. She made them sound sexy, I didn’t think that possible, but she did, so, the job is hers if I ever decide to do a podcast.
Jeffrey called me on Friday after work and asked if I would pick up the cake for Tessa’s birthday celebration. Of course I readily agreed, I called Kroger and they are concocting a pink Barbie dream cake, I can hardly wait to pick it up today.
The Irishman is not getting past this illness he has, I do believe it is time to go back to the doctor and figure this thing out once and for all. This is the craziest thing I have ever seen, I hope it is taken care of soon. They figure out what it is and cure him, not fun seeing someone you love being ill.
There are times I wish I were a gourmet chef, I love food so much, however I know if I could really cook, I would be at least 800 pounds. Such a dilemma, I am thinking I might go to Costco this week and see if they have any peaches. Those peaches were so amazing, I might even break diet rules and get some chocolate fudge and pour over them. OMG, the best thing I have ever had in my mouth are chocolate covered peaches. My friend Terri introduced me to them years ago, when I saw her slicing the fresh peaches and then pouring chocolate over them I thought she was nuts. I told her that, are you insane I said, she said, Angie, no, try them. I did and was instantly hooked, so amazing, the chocolatey goodness combined with the sweet juicy peach was just a revelation.
Today is the birthday celebration for Tessa, I am sure it will be wonderful. See you all tomorrow with full details, maybe a picture of the cake.
