I have been a fan of Star Trek since I was four years old. Yes, 4 years old, I fully remember watching the show at that age and falling in love. What was not to love about the show? A woman on the bridge giving the captain information he needed to fully form a plan on how to proceed with that weeks adventure. A Vulcan science officer, trusted second in command, logical, steady and a force to be reckoned with. The captain himself, cowboy diplomacy at its best, Captain Kirk was part rogue, part diplomat and always had the answer in the end. A loyal friend, a faithless companion (let’s face it, Kirk logged more time with space babes than anyone in the known universe) and in the end someone you really wanted at the helm of a starship.
I loved it, I have loved all incarnations of the creation since, I was there opening weekend for Star Trek the Motion Picture, almost swooning at a Spock dressed in all black.
Having said all of that I was finally able to see Star Trek Discovery, if you are an Amazon Prime member you can get a free 7 day pass to watch CBS All Access. As soon as I saw that I jumped on it, I have been absolutely dying to watch this new series. I have heard good things about it, however, in all honesty, I don’t listen to others when it comes to my beloved Star Trek. I like to experience it for myself, so, for the past two days I have been glued to my television watching.
I was not disappointed, the people who created this have not only honored those of us who came first, they built on the premise of the original show. This is set 10 years before the original show started, we have some returning characters, a lot of new, but the canon remains the same.
I won’t give anything away, as I believe everyone should discover (see what I did there) Discovery for themselves. To say I loved it is an understatement, I can barely wait for season 2, I don’t think I will pay for CBS All Access, because this is the only show I would watch on it. So I may wait until the season is complete and wait for another 7 day free pass to watch. I loved binging on the show, there were only 15 episodes to this season. I don’t know how many they have planned for next season.
If you are a Trek fan, watch it, if you are not, watch it, it can stand alone. I will tell you, the music they did for the intro is amazing, they have a new twist to a classic tv hit theme show song, they even incorporated some of the newer movies notes in there. I want to download it and listen just to the music.
I will tell you this tidbit, the very last episode, the closing music, is all from the original Star Trek show. It actually gave me goosebumps to hear it again. I loved it, my nostalgia is complete at that point.
So there you have it folks, my unprofessional, totally from the heart review of the new Star Trek Discovery. It is a fine addition to a stellar list of shows and movies.
