My Thoughts on Thanksgiving

It is the day before a major American holiday that most people associate with food, when in reality it is supposed to be a day of reflections and giving thanks. On Thursday, September 24, 1789, the first House of Representatives voted to recommend the First Amendment of the newly drafted Constitution to the states for ratification. The next day, Congressman Elias Boudinot from New Jersey proposed that the House and Senate jointly request of President Washington to proclaim a day of thanksgiving for “the many signal favors of Almighty God”. Boudinot said that he “could not think of letting the session pass over without offering an opportunity to all the citizens of the United States of joining, with one voice, in returning to Almighty God their sincere thanks for the many blessings he had poured down upon them.” Interesting, no mention of turnkey, dressing or football, it begs the question, when did this sacred American holiday become bastardized? It is now only about food, football, dysfunctional families and shopping. Yes, shopping, let us all get up and leave our families, sit in the cold and make a mad dash into the store to grab up some electronic device that we really don’t need in the first place.
What I am proposing is that we get back to what Thanksgiving was really supposed to be about, don’t do away with the food, family and yes you can keep your football, but let’s really give thanks to God for all that we have in this country. Let us sincerely pray for the leaders of our country that they will indeed make good decisions for us and let us pray for our friends, family and neighbors.
I am beyond thankful I was born an American citizen, I am proud to be an American, if you do not want to be in this country, we are not stopping you from leaving. I am tired of people who live here, who are not from here, bad mouthing this place, this country, who has given so many so much. So this Thanksgiving, let’s really give thanks, I know I am thankful that I have the opportunity to work and make the money that will pay for Christmas without me going into debt to provide a nice Christmas for my children and grand child.
What are you thankful for this year? I would love to hear from you.

Things I hate with a Passion

Today I was watching the View and Joan Rivers was on talking about things she hates, I, of course, started thinking. What do I hate? Well, I am going to tell you a few things that I hate.

I hate screaming children in stores, before anyone says oh their children, let me tell you, I never allowed my children to scream and throw fits in public. Ask them, they will tell you that they did not do that. It is called healthy fear, my children knew the consequences of their actions and they knew throwing fits in public would be punished. So, control your kids people, make them stop screaming in public. I don’t care what they do in the privacy of your homes, however, when you make my shopping experience less enjoyable, I do care.

I hate people who say that they never watch television. Seriously? We know you do, we know you are probably the ones keeping the horrible programming on television. Such as Dancing with the Stars and Survivor, oh and let’s not forget American Idol. If you really want to do some good in the world, stop watching that crap! Keep actors employed.

I hate people who say, oh I forgot to eat today. Really? I have never in my entire life forgotten to eat. Of course only skinny people say this, perhaps I will as well if I ever achieve that level of thinness. But for now, stop saying that please, especially in the presence of those of us who need to lose weight.

I hate when overweight women say they are real women because they are fat. Being overweight does not make a woman real. What makes a real woman is one that respects other women, that tries to better her part of the world and one that has the courage to stand by her convictions. No matter the size. So if you believe the only thing making you real is your weight, think again. You actually need to look within yourself and find something else, something substantial in the way you deal with the world.

I hate liver, yes liver, it smells and has a weird texture and tastes nasty. No matter how much you tell me that it is good for me and will replenish the iron in my body, I will never eat it. I don’t want to be around it and heaven help the person who has me over for dinner under false pretenses only to try and feed me liver. Yuck.

I hate the hot Texas summers, even though I have chosen to live here for the rest of my days, I will never learn to love the heat. I want snow and lots of it, give the heat to Mexico and bring the cool weather here.

Shopping, Lunch and Ladies

Well, tomorrow is the day, I start my new shift, I know you all are tired of hearing about it, but I am way excited. Yesterday was a fun day, I had lunch with my ladies that lunch crew, a good crowd showed up and we had the best time, good food, good company and a ton of laughter. Next I took the Irishman’s girls shopping, they were in desperate need of new shorts and tops. So, I had made a decision recently to support JC Penney in it’s effort to revamp itself. So, off to JC Penney we go, I am so happy I made this decision, 7 tops and 4 pairs of shorts for under $70.00. The girls are now wearing the same size in clothing so I told them the majority of the clothes they have to share but they will still have their own special outfits.
Next it was Target then home, they were very tired as they did not get to bed until after 11 the night before due to their dance recital and up early for Carolion for her Saturday school. By 9pm they were almost falling asleep in the living room, so off to bed for them and me. I was exhausted as well, so a good nights sleep was had by all.
This morning was pancakes, normal color, with red sprinkles, add some coffee (for me) and bacon and it was a pretty darn good morning.
I will let you all know in the coming days how much I love my schedule, I hope you all have a great day and a great start to your weeks!

Dawn’s in Trouble, Must Be Tuesday

I did something I have not done in a while last night, I cooked, yes, me, cooked, not in the microwave, but in the oven. I had an urge, I saw a recipe and wanted to try it, so I did, and it was yummy. Bonus, I did not set the fire alarm off, major accomplishment. I will be taking some for lunch today.
I will be taking my lunch as I will not have a car today, the Irishman has to take me to work as my car is in the shop and Alex is coming home today and well, his car is my spare. So excited Alex is coming home, hated him being in Mexico. So, today is going to be a good day.
Our new shift bid selections have come out and I have turned mine in, I really hope I get my number 1 choice, keep your fingers crossed. All the people who currently have the shift I want are lower in seniority than me, so unless there is an unsettling balance I should get it. I will tell you all what it is after they announce the new schedule Which will be March 23rd.
I am saddened by the lack of cold and snow this year, no one will ever know the disappointment that I feel. I feel abandoned by snow, ok, if I am honest, I feel like I am being punished. I can’t figure out for what, but I feel this is a punishment. Or, maybe God needed all the snow in heaven this year for Chewie’s enjoyment. I thing I have figured it out! Some state needed to sacrifice their snow, Chewie I gladly give you my snow this year! I hope you have enjoyed it my friend, you deserve it.
This weekend I went on a mini shopping spree on Ruelala and Zappos, so I am spent out, no more shopping for me for a while, although I do need new spring and summer tops. Hmmmm, could be a shopping trip is in my future! Till tomorrow my friends, I hope your day brings peace, love, happiness and if you can’t have that, chocolate!

My Saturday

Yesterday was an incredibly full and wonderful day, filled with emotion and old-fashioned fun. It started with the party to celebrate Almetta’s 80th birthday, she is Sandi’s mom for those of you who are new to reading me. Wanda was the ring leader in this endeavor, and let me tell you, it came off beautifully. If any of my readers are in Plano, TX please make a point to go to One 2 One, located in the Shops at Legacy. Just a beautiful space, excellent food and just a terrific staff. We had a private room, the staff just took care of us, making sure everything was filled, the food was plentiful and we were all comfortable. Several people spoke, there is one in particular that stuck with me. It was Louise, who is just a beautiful woman, very regal, elegant and, well for lack of a better word, classy. She said that in her country it takes a village to raise a child, and in there, exists a Queen Mother, and Al is our Queen Mother. She really is, Sandi graciously shared her mother with all of us.
The money tree was a huge hit, I am so happy it turned out the way it did. Something about the silver paint on the tree actually camouflaged the money. So when you look at it, the money wasn’t really visible at first. The look on Al’s face at first was like oh thank you, then when she noticed the money, it was “OH THANK YOU!” It was too cute, and so funny.
I also got to see Jason and Daniel, Sandi’s sons, I have not seen them in for a while. So good seeing them, they are incredible young men and Sandi would be proud of the way they are living their lives.
Next up was time with Elizabeth Anne, she came down from Bonham to celebrate my birthday with me. First up, Starbucks for a coffee treat, then shopping, then dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Now, I realize this is our usual time together. What made this so spectacular is that Elizabeth was the one paying! What a switch, she said the bank is probably going to call her and say, Um, these are charges we usually see on your moms card, what’s going on. She bought me the cutest sweater and my first pair of expensive jeans. I cannot wait to wear them! Thank you Elizabeth for a great birthday outing!

Holiday Happenings

The miracle that is a vacation week continues, I got my new boots yesterday, my incredible over the knee boots, and today is the first day of winter! How amazing is that! New boots in time for the first day of winter. Proof of Gods love of me just continues on.
Yesterday was an amazing day spent with Elizabeth Anne, shopping, Taco Bueno, and did I mention shopping.
Then watching Love Actually with the Irishman, I love that movie, I think all fo the actors did a fantastic job in their roles. And, please, don’t gag, but I love watching with the Irishman. I think it is an incredibly romantic, funny movie and I consider it “our” holiday movie. A must to watch together.
What are some of your favorite holiday movies that you watch with your significant other? And I say holiday because it could be a New Years movie as well. I have not take Christmas out of my season.
Bad news from yesterday, I took my car to have it looked at, Jeffrey and Jeff (ex-husband i.e. car genius) tells me it is the intake manifold and the gasket seals that need replacing and it will take them a couple of days to do it. So I am carless for till Saturday. That was my bad news, the good news is, it will be fixed by people I trust.
I hope everyone has a great Thursday!!

Updates

This morning I awoke to a pending comment for my site, it was from a woman wanting all of us to know that A.L. is a happy, healthy nine year old girl who is well loved and cared for. She will never know how happy I was to read that simple statement. A.L. was the child who was tortured and abused by someone I had worked with, I wrote about the case earlier.
I don’t know how this woman found my site, I am just happy she did, God does answer prayers and I know He is looking out for this little girl and will continue to do so.
This weekend was filled with shopping, I am almost done which is amazing, I am one of those people that don’t Christmas shop until Christmas Eve! I only have a few things left to get Freddy and some things for Elizabeth. I will buy a tree on my way home from work on Tuesday and put it on the back porch to “fall”, then this next weekend will be decorating time! So excited, and I only have 6 and a half days of work left, then off for a week! Beyond excited about that.
I have plans to get my nails done, and baking, yes baking, and cleaning out things and more shopping and all kinds of things! I already sleep late, well later than 3am! I now wake up at a normal 6:30 am, I usually get up at that time on weekends as well. So, I will more than likely get up at that time when I am off.
Carpet cleaning was great yesterday, except moving all of the furniture! That stuff is heavy, I managed to get the dining room table on its side to move it, however when the man left, it was really tough getting back upright! Everything is in it’s place now and the carpet is very clean, I had him go over the dinning area twice, as it is a particularly high traffic area. Everything looks shiny and new. So yay me!

Another Gateway Day

Ok, so, I am totally in love with my new hairstylist, she just rocks, her name is Beatrice and if you are in the Plano area and looking for someone new, let me know. I will give you her information. She listens to what I want and makes it happen, just incredible, I am in love.
I got my hair done last night that is why I am waxing on today regarding Beatrice’s brilliance. Today is Thursday the gateway to Friday, I know you have all heard me say it before; well it bears saying again, and again and again. How bout them apples? Well I ordered a few Christmas presents before I left for work this morning, no I will not be telling for who, oh alright, 3 guesses. If you get them correct I will answer in the comments section.
I don’t think I have anything exciting to do this upcoming weekend, which will be a nice change, perhaps it is time for a well needed much earned pajama day! Now that would be exciting, watching old episodes of Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse and Firefly, now that is a Saturday in the making. Maybe popcorn is in order and diet coke; stop me now before I just pass out from the thought.
Next week is Thanksgiving, I will be writing a special, what I am grateful for entry for next week, I know you are all looking forward to that. I really have nothing today, except my hair looks amazing!
